ABOUT PORTRAITS
When painting a head try to forget the subject.Pretend it is an apple or still-life objects. You'll be able to see the facts much more, such a light and shade value.16"x20" canvas is a good size for a head and shoulder.Any larger involves much clothing, unless you care to include hands. Then in that case 24"x30" or over is better.Avoid sharp edges and brush the head into the background and the background into the head to prevent that 'cut-out' appearance.Exaggerate principles instead of details.Your works will say much more!
